The annual Duel in the Desert Tournament, Arizona vs California is fast approaching. This years tournament will be on November 6 & 7, 2010 at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility (BASF).

The Duel in the Desert Team Trials is the tournament that we use to choose the Arizona Team. The Team Trials will be on October 2 & 3, 2010 at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility (BASF).

The AZ Duel in the Desert Trials selects the Arizona Duel Team. Traditionally, the AZ Duel Team is made up of 20 seniors (6 recurve men, 6 recurve women, 4 compound men, 4 compound women) and 4 Juniors (Jr. recurve male, Jr. recurve female, Jr. compound male, Jr. compound female). Arizona Juniors often make the Senior team and Cadets often make the Junior team. Arizona Duel Team members receive support from the ASAA. Which includes a team shirt and Duel Tournament entry fee paid for.

Duel in the Desert history page

The Duel in the Desert Team Trials and the Duel in the Desert is open to all archers regardless if they are shooting to make the team.

Arizona listed resident USAA members that would like to take part in the Arizona Duel in the Desert Team, but are unable to take part in the Trials are encouraged to contact Mike Cullumber at mcullumber@cox.net to be put onto a waiting list should AZ Duel Team appointments be necessary.  Note that appointed team members will be required to pay a fee equal to the AZ Duel Trials to help offset team expenses.

2010 Arizona State JOAD Outdoor sets records with attendance and scores in the newest outdoor archery venue.

Results

Steve Yee, Arizona State Archery Association - April 17-18, 2010.

Arizona’s newest outdoor archery venue hosted the 2010 Arizona State JOAD Outdoor tournament in a grand way on April 17 and 18, 2010.

In its first major public debut, the Paseo Vista Archery Club opened its doors to a perfect score – record club participation ever for a JOAD outdoor tournament, new state records being set, and heaps of praise for the new venue and the club.

Day one started with excellent shooting weather – extremely light wind, moderate temperatures to the mid 80’s, and plenty of shade for the archers and the viewing gallery alike.  Day two began right where things left off – with similar weather presenting the archers with superb shooting conditions that were accentuated by the wonderful design and backdrops of the venue.

Twenty eight archers representing 8 clubs participated in the tournament.  Archers from 8 years old to 18 represented every major division, with the Bowman and Cub divisions being the most contested.

After the second shooting day was complete and all the totals tallied, 18 new state records were set by 5 different archers, with the crown jewel of a perfect 4th distance score of 360/22x capping off the tournaments’ results.

The following State records were set:

Yeoman Compound Male: Spencer Yee - 20m, 340; 20m, 337; 10m, 348; 10m, 358; Total – 1383

Cub Male Recurve:  Andrew Mateo – 40m, 320; 30m, 316; 20m, 336; Total – 1239

Cub Male Compound:  James Rutherford – 50m, 327; 40m, 352; 30m, 352; 20m, 360 (22x); Total – 1391

Cadet Male Recurve:  Nathan Yamaguchi – 50m, 293

Junior Female Compound:  Mackenzie Kieborz – 50m, 324; 30m, 352; Total, 1328.

The Entries list has been updated on http://www.azjoad.com/2010/2010_ASAA_Outdoor.htm.  Please check your information and name spelling.  The distance that you shoot during the Qualification Round is also listed.  Reminder: New rule for 2010 is that Masters (all) shoot the same distances as Cadets which is 60m for this tournament.

Remember to bring your chairs.

Most people have signed up to shoot the “Get Set” Open. The Open will be shot all at 70m.  It appears that both the Compound group and the Recurve group will be starting at the 1/32nd round to kick off the new Set System Elimination Round. Those of you who are shooting 50m or 60m for the Championship will have a chance to get sight settings for 70m during the Lunch Break.

We have a few out of town guests who are joining us. Please give them a warm Arizona greeting.

Kowboy Kookin’ (aka: Mike Koistinen, Heather and Brian) will be serving snacks during the tournament and lunch during the break while we rank the archers for the brackets.
